Whew, this one’s embarrassing. Nothing like a house fire to reveal your deepest, darkest secrets to the world. As in, literally deep and dark. Law enforcement and fire department officials in Bethesda, Maryland near Washington, D.C. stumbled across an unexplained and disconcerting scene after responding to a house fire on September 10th. The fire’s cause is still undetermined.
The body of an unidentified man was found in the house’s basement. Upon recovering the body, fire officials encountered what they described as “hoarding conditions.” When they began excavating a gas line under the house in an attempt to investigate the fire’s cause, they discovered what has been described by law enforcement as a “house of horrors” complete with a mysterious network of tunnels dug below the foundation of the house that extend all the way to the street.
Montgomery County Fire Chief Dan Ogren has been pretty tight lipped about the investigation as it is still ongoing, but has hinted that investigators have found what sounds like a mad scientist’s secret underground laboratory:
This has been an incredibly complicated fire scene for our investigations. The conditions in the basement became more and more unusual as the investigation went on. We did have some electrical wiring and for lack of a better word, components. I’m not sure exactly what… they were in the area where we think the ignition source was.
The owner of the home who escaped the fire, Daniel Beckwitt, is well-known on the computer hacking/cybersecurity circuit. His Google+ profile contains a picture of what appears to be an underground bunker. Could police have unearthed some sort of underground hacking lair? Or could something more sinister like beneath the ground in Bethesda, Maryland? At this time, this one remains a strange and unnerving mystery.
