These buildings, which were once all part of a tuberculosis sanatorium, were constructed around 1910 by Dr. Nathan Boyd, medical doctor and international businessman. Legend says that Dr. Boyd had a beloved wife who was suffering from the terrible disease, and that he built the place, up in the rugged yet beautiful mountains, for her. There are other rumors about Boyd's Sanatorium, as well. Rumors of a more... unknown element. Some say that this canyon is filled with restless spirits, and that some of them happen to be the spirits of the patients who passed away up at the mountainside sanatorium.
The Caretaker's house, above, had a wooden porch with a breath-taking view of the valley below. It is not hard to imagine that there might be spirits here. The trail leading up to this place is officially closed every day well before dark, earlier in fact than all of the other trails in the area. And, there have been reports of campers in the nearby canyon campgrounds being terrified by strange visions and horrific nightmares featuring torturous treatments undergone by gaunt and ghostly "patients," even though some of the campers are said to have no prior knowledge of the nearby sanatorium's presence. There have been various paranormal investigations at this location; one group even claims to have gotten photos of "shadowy figures" in the ruins. In fact, it was here at Boyd's Sanatorium where my camera started acting up and would not work at all- I had to borrow my Sis' camera to get these shots. The camera had worked fine at the Van Patten ruins, and it began to work once again as soon as we went a little ways down the trail away from the sanatorium... it just would not function, period, the whole time we were in the vicinity of the sanatorium.

i have been up to the sanatorium with my kids old church group numeorus times. it is a big hike and when its hot take plenty of water. its a nice outing. i used to have some pictures of the old buildings somewhere. i have no clue where they are now. lots of orbs and even some odd shadows etc. the place is ran by the BLM bureau of land management and they are constantly watching to make sure you dont do anything wrong. it really neat to walk right up to the side of the mountain and look up. awe inspiring. there is also a place right before the visitor center called la cueva a cave in the sandstone out cropping that a priest stayed in for awhile long ago and dealt with the local native population. i have seen the cave and beleive me its nothing special. its a bit crazy thinking someone actually lived there
ReplyDeleteI used to live just a few miles north of the ruins off Baylor Canyon Road. I have had an experience with an orb.. First let me say that I lived for a short time in Tonopah, Az near a military facility~ we regularly saw UFOs there & came to understand most of the objects we saw in the sky were military experiments yet unknown to the public.
ReplyDeleteOne afternoon I looked out the east facing living room window I noticed a pretty large light coming down the west side of the Organ Mtns. At first I thought it was an ATV or something & didn't think too much about it. A little while later I noticed the light wasn't maintaining a straight path. It looked more like a huge bubble softly & slowly 'bouncing' in a back and forth motion down the side of the mountain. I assumed it was some type of military experiment from White Sands Missile Range which is on the opposite side of the mtn range, and forgot about it. Later that night, about 9:30p, my husband & I were standing outside in the backyard talking, when looking over his shoulder into what should have been the darkness of the desert, I saw a round white light hovering about 6 ft off the ground approximately 50 yards away. When my husband finally realized he'd lost my attention, he turned around & the light took off into the desert. Bobby immediately ran to the car & took off after it. He said the orb running parallel with him over top the desert shrub for several miles then it took off in a flash & was gone. He tried to catch it running very unsafe speeds especially for a gravel road but was unable to. We saw the orb several times after that but it wasn't until several years later after I'd moved back to the Midwest that I realized that the orb was actually a spirit from the sanitarium..
