The Abita Mystery House is known for its weird creations, like the Bass-a-Gator or double-headed chickens, but owner and artist John Preble was making something new to wow the visitors: a two-headed squirrel-gator.
“I like to make things that people are interested in. I mean, some people are not as interested in it, it's not for everyone, but a lot of people like to see two-headed squirrel gators,” Preble said emphatically.
But Tuesday afternoon, while his latest creation dried in the sun, Preble claims a mother and daughter who frequent the gift shop swiped the little monster, right beneath his nose.
“So she picks it up, and she looks at it, and she brings it to her mother, and I thought she was gonna show it to her and no she goes around the driver’s seat and gets in the car, and I'm like - she didn't drive away with it?” Preble said. “I just couldn't believe it. I called the police. It's worth about $300, maybe $500.”
Preble created a second copy of the creature he refers to as “The Baby,” but it’s slated to travel with a cross-country freak show.
“It's very good. I'm good at what I do, but it's my baby,” Preble said, feigning tears.
He hopes the duo of alleged thieves will return his creature creation unharmed, wrapped up like a bundle at the doorstep of the museum. Until then, he says the oddities at the North Shore’s weirdest museum will be one just short of a full freak show.
