For many, the most anticipated aspect of October is cooler weather, an abundance of chocolate, and the return of pumpkin spice everything, but for paranormal experts like Mike Atencio, the crisp cold air brings another world of possibilities. Winter, according to Atencio, is the best time for spirits.
Atencio, of Homer, has been formally investigating the paranormal realm for 45 years and more recently teaching eager ghost hunting enthusiasts how to capture spirit activity.
Atencio’s first encounter with the other side occurred when he was just 5 years old.
“We moved into an old house when I was very young and my mom told my brother and I that there was a ghost in our house,” recalls Atencio. The house was in Coronado, California. “Things would disappear but we were never fearful. I was hooked right away and just wanted to know if ghosts were real.”
Atencio has continued to pursue his ghosts, and over the years technology has enabled ghost hunters to put the science in paranormal research.
“I use several different tools including the EMF meter that measures changes in the electro-magnetic field, digital recorders, and a compass,” said Atencio. “These tools collect empirical evidence and when we can collect hard data, ghost hunting isn’t just a bunch of weird people running around in the dark but scientists. However, I also believe that the mind is the best tool we have to discover anything, including ghosts.”
While ghost hunting may seem like a fun late night adventure, Atencio has several pieces of advice for amateur ghost hunters.
“Safety first! Never go alone. Get written permission and don’t trespass on anyone’s property,” warns Atencio. “Bring supplies like food, change of clothes and equipment. Most importantly don’t go looking for ghosts. Look for things that don’t fit with the normal surroundings.”
As with many things in life, seeing is believing and for many, ghosts are simply figments of one’s imagination.
“If and when it does happen, it will be the most profound thing to ever happen in your life,” states Atencio. “Because at that moment of realization, you'll know there is something beyond your physical body and that there is life after death. It will change you forever. And people will think you've lost your mind. Don't try to convince them. Until it happens to them, they will never understand.”
Atencio continues to share his passion and skills with students by holding ghost hunting classes.
“I taught ghost hunting classes through Louisiana Tech’s continuing education program, but when a new director took over, the classes moved to online,” said Atencio. “I had 25 students and an overflow of more students waiting for the next class.”
