Residents of Green Bay, Wisconsin have been terrified this past week by a mysterious figure wandering city streets dressed like a clown who walked straight out of Stephen King’s nightmares. The clown has been seen by dozens of local residents silently roaming Green Bay in a soiled clown outfit, while carrying four black balloons. Most of the sightings have occurred late in the night or early in the wee hours of the morning.
Photos of the clown have gone viral, and a Facebook fan page has been created in the clown’s honor. Several Facebook photos of the clown have been shared nearly ten thousand times. Netizens have even given the creepy wanderer a name: “Gags the Clown.”
Local citizens are understandably creeped out, and have called for authorities to put a stop to the make-up-wearing menace. Green Bay police, however are near-powerless. Captain Kevin Warych of the Green Bay Police Department stated that just being creepy isn’t enough to arrest the ghostly clown figure:
A person can walk down the sidewalk dressed however they want, as long as they’re in a place they legally can be, and they’re not in a place that has a closing time like a park, they can be there, dressed however they want.
The clown’s motives and true identity remain a mystery. Many local residents have taken to social media to speculate what kinds of forces might be behind “Gags.” Comments on the clown’s Facebook page have speculated that Gags might be simply a publicity stunt or cry for attention, while others believe actual demonic forces are work. One Facebook commenter has even worried for Gags’ safety:
Ya, I wish they would get him in costume, and get out and add some more pics and video….this is a great idea…it’ll be hard to keep him from getting hurt though…frightened people can do stupid stuff.
