Abandoned Places: Kola Peninsula

The Kola peninsula is a cape in northwest Russia. This region borders Norway and Finland and has direct access to the ocean. Because of its strategic position the Russian army had hundreds of bases were there.

During the terrible 1990s, the Russian army's budget was cut so costs had to be also. One way to save was to give up some bases and concentrate bases down to one. So many of the army bases and supporting housing were abandoned. The other way to reduce costs was to pay less to the personnel, so during 1990s many Russian soldiers and officers had to give up Army service because they couldn't live on the low wages. It was impossible in these Northern territories to keep gardens or domestic animals to save on expenses so the people all left.

Apartment prices were greatly reduced, going to as low as $2000 for a 4 room flat. But even that didn't help keep people around, so these hundreds of residential multi-storey homes became abandoned. Now the many Army built dwellings are without occupants or visitors and a lot of military hardware has also been abandoned. See the photos of what once was most likely some very nice homes and buildings, as well as state of the art military equipment.
