Black magic and white magic often get used interchangeably, but they are, in fact, very different. Magic is the attempt to bend the universe toward your will so naturally there are mixed feelings about the whole thing, especially from religious groups. But magic comes in all shapes and sizes, some better than others. Here are nine ways black magic is different than white:
1. It Sometimes Comes From a Place of Anger
Black magic is often a last resort and it's prime purpose is almost never about helping people. Most of the time it comes from people who are angry or in turmoil in some way.
2. It Can Be Selfish
Black magic can be about bringing greater power or wealth to the spell caster. It's not usually about bringing greater peace into the world.
3. It's Not About Protection
White magic can be very powerful. Just as powerful as black magic, in fact. But it's usually not about shielding or protecting energy. It is usually about making things happen and shift in big ways.
4. It's More Aggressive
White magic is a little more passive. Black magic tends to directly address problems and push for big changes. It sometimes calls on more powerful spirits to move the energy. This is what you call on when you need big, powerful changes.
5. It Doesn't Use Holy Water
White magic often uses holy water in spells. There is some belief in Christian thoughts. Black magic uses none of that.
6. It's More Dangerous
People who dabble in black magic need more protection. It's much more dangerous and leaves the practitioner much more vulnerable to bad spirits.
7. It Sometimes Harms
The motto of white magic is more or less to not harm things. Black magic will do harm if it is a means to an end.
8. Black Magic Offers More Protection
White magic can only go so far. Many magic practitioners start with white magic for protection but move on to black magic when it's insufficient.
9. It's More Intense
White magic is much more innocent. Black magic can do real harm. It is so important to be careful if you start to dabble in the black arts. But no one kind of magic is "bad" or "good." It's not that simple. It's all about the power you want to attract and the magic you want to conjure.
