The spooky moment a "ghost" terrorised a tourist in a motel room by moving objects has been labelled fake after viewers claimed to spot how he did it.

Frank Ramirez acted startled when a phone came off its hook, a towel was pulled off a counter and a hanger fell to the floor in the motel room in which he staying last week.

He filmed what has been called a "spirit" haunt the room and shared the eerie clip on social media, on which it has since been viewed more than two million times.

Mr Ramirez wrote: "IDK what it is, but I know it was here. You be the judge. Hotel in Harlingen.

"It's never happened to me before in the hotel -- never experienced anything like that.

"The proof is in the pudding."

But some social media users quickly rebuffed the clip as "fake".

Neil Conteras offered his theory that Mr Ramirez attached a fishing line to the objects and pulled them down himself, an idea shared widely on Facebook .

"Check out the part with the white towel it moves before he says something and then it falls nice fishing string work lol," he wrote.

Another user wrote: "Look at the scissors on the refrigerator as if he was cutting string. Watch his left hand through the mirror when the hanger falls off... fake!!"

Mr Ramirez insists the video is genuine.

He added: "Everybody's got their own opinion and I'm open to that and I appreciate it.

"But I'm not going to disrespect or talk down to anyone just because they don't believe the video, or don't believe it's real."
