Ramakant Keni, the psychic healer who was practicing at Bombay Hospital and was suspended by the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC), has given to the Council a written undertaking saying he will not practice parapsychology. The 94-year-old had his license suspended after he failed to show up for an inquiry initiated by the MMC. This after Mumbai Mirror's story on October 7 questioned how Bombay Hospital, one of Mumbai's finest institutions, allowed Keni to practice psychic healing, which has no basis in modern medical science, from its premises. Keni and Bombay Hospital then appealed against the MMC's order in the Bombay High Court.
On March 18, Justices SC Dharmadhikari and SC Gupte ordered that Keni be allowed to resume practicing allopathic medicine and disposed of the case.
On Tuesday, Keni began seeing patients at Bombay Hospital. Keni's assistant said that he had four patients on Tuesday and that the entire interior of the clinic had been changed. "The pictures and statues from the clinic have been removed. Now it's a basic doctor's clinic," he said.
Bombay Hospital was running a department that specialised in psychic healing, a procedure that contravenes accepted medical practice and shuns such traditional methods as surgery, radiology, medication, and even physical examinations.
The unit, called the Parapsychology Department, was headed up by Keni and offered a form of healing that was not recognised by the Medical Council of India or its Maharashtra chapter, both of which have granted Bombay Hospital official recognition as a medical facility. Kishor Taori, President, MMC, said, "We have received the undertaking from Ramakant Keni on Saturday and we have revoked the suspension of his licence."
Dr Rajkumar Patil, Medical Director of Bombay Hospital, said, "As Keni has given us an undertaking that he won't practice parapsychology, he will allowed to practice general allopathy." Dr Patil added that, on the Bombay Hospital's website, Ramakant Keni's profile says that he is a Para therapist, but that will soon be changed.
