Tales of the Ouija - Part 5

Via paranormal.about.com by Stephen Wagner

Can this simple little "game" open doors to the unknown?

Most paranormal investigators today advise against the use of the Ouija as a harmless pastime or game. There are too many instances, they say, of negative feelings and unwanted phenomena. The skeptics maintain that these sometimes frightening experiences are nothing but the result of over-stimulated imaginations, and that the stories told are of events that are imagined or greatly exaggerated. Those who lived the experiences, however, usually refuse to accept this explanation. What they saw, heard and felt was quite real to them.

So who is right? Both, perhaps. Those who study and explore the "psychic," or the power of the mind, understand that the imagination - focused and amplified by the intensity and emotions of a Ouija session - can possibly produce physical phenomena.

Or it can convince the mind that such phenomena are taking place. In any case, it's not a thing that should be taken lightly, as it is so often by pre-teen and teenage girls at sleepovers, hoping to find out which boy in class likes them. Angela G. had a sleepover like this with some of her close friends. But their innocent questions soon produced the unexpected...

THE CLEAR MESSAGE

At exactly 12:00 p.m. we starting communicating with the board. At first we asked stupid silly questions, but then we stared getting more serious. My friend that brought the Ouija came to the party late because she was coming from her uncle's funeral. When we asked for the spirit's initials, it spelled the ones of her uncle. I personally thought it was one of my friends playing a joke on me, so I put the Ouija board to the test. I told the spirit that all of us would go out of that room for about three minutes. When we would come back in, I told it, I wanted to see a sign that there was really a spirit talking to us. So we left the room. A few minutes later, I made sure I was the first one back in that room. Boy did that spirit hear our message: The empty dishes were all turned upside down. (We were holding the séance in the kitchen)... a box of mints were all over the floor in the shape of a star... all of the cupboards were open... it was very, very cold... we noticed that if you drew a line from point to point where all the things were misplaced, it formed a star. Steve and his friends found a Ouija board that had been thrown out with someone's trash. They came to know, perhaps why it had been thrown out and wished they had left it by the dumpster. Steve is a scientist and was eager to show his friends what nonsense the Ouija board is. But the Ouija had its own ideas when he had his college friends placed their hands on the board...

THE VOICE

It immediately began spelling Latin (which my friend knew) and he understood something I still don't know. He turned flush white and refused to play anymore. It continued to spell out details, and my other friends became frightened and took their hands off. At this point, I'm stumped at the physics of what is moving the piece to the letters and in this mystical mood failed to realize until at least five or six seconds had gone by that it was moving my hands alone. When I realized what was happening, I immediately took my hands off and felt a sensation like a chill that runs down the spine. I went back to my dorm with my dorm mate and fell fast asleep. At about 3 a.m., I came out of a dream that my hands were on the Ouija board and my fingers were moving to the letter incredibly fast spelling things to me I didn't want to know about. It was intense enough that I physically sat up and opened my eyes in our pitch black room. Just as clear as day, a "sunspot" image of the Ouija board was on the wall and my fingers were on it. I couldn't control my own thoughts. I then looked at my hands and realized my fingers were actually moving. I simply couldn't stop them and shoved them under my armpits and said, "NO!" Almost immediately, in a voice I'll never forget, I heard, "Why are you hurting me?" coming from the direction of my room mate's bed. I figured he must have woken up, so I asked, "What?" Again it repeated, "Why are you hurting me?" I realized this voice was not the least bit groggy and my room mate was passed out drunk. I couldn't think of anything to say but, "What are you talking about?" That's when all of a sudden my room mate woke up and the most awful phlegm-filled sound came out as he managed a "What's wrong?" and then immediately went back to sleep. (Read the complete story.)

Steve's story is an example of how people often experience weird phenomena some time after they have used the board. This was also that case for another reader, who uses the handle Timberwolf. He and his friends had fooled around with the Ouija, asking silly questions and experiencing nothing creepy or out of the ordinary at the time. It was later that night that Timberwolf encountered the unexplained...

THE DEMONIC SKULL

I woke up because I was really cold. I looked at my clock and saw that it was around midnight. I rolled over onto my back and was going to just look at the ceiling until I fell asleep. I saw something above me, and it took me a few seconds to register it. Above me was this thing. It was only the torso of something (it had no legs) and was the color of dried blood. The torso was very muscular and looked as if it could have crushed me in a second. That wasn't what scared me, though. The face of the thing was what frightened me. It looked as if someone had taken a skull and stretched the skin over it so it looked as it it was about to tear. It had no eyes, but burning lights in the eye sockets; no ears either, but it had two horns coming out of its head just above its eyes. It looked down at me and smiled at me. When I woke up the next day, I looked at my clock. It had stopped at exactly 12:00 midnight. I haven't seen it since, but I will never use a Ouija board again. (Read the complete story.)

There are many stories like this - phenomena after the fact. But occasionally there are incidents that occur even with just the intention of using the Ouija. When she was in fifth grade, Shannon and her friends decided to try it, just for fun. They didn't have a manufactured board, so they prepared to make one. While going to do this, somehow a door seemed to open by itself. This might have had a mundane cause, but it scared the girls enough to forget the Ouija idea. But the story doesn't end there. It was after she went to bed that Shannon saw the apparition...

THE LADY IN WHITE

I couldn't sleep at all that night. I just sat there with the blankets over my head. All night I heard footsteps walking around me, and finally I got the nerve to see what was there. I pulled down the blanket and standing in the doorway was something that has always been etched into my mind: There was a lady, maybe in her 30s. She didn't look very friendly and she just stared at me like she was going to fly right at me and strangle me. I was scared to death. I remember her wearing a sheer white dress that seemed to be ripped and cut at the bottom. She was standing still looking at me, but her dress was waving like there was wind flowing at her. Then, as quick as you can blink, she was gone. (Read the complete story.)

The truth is, most Ouija experiences are benign - it may "answer" some questions, but nothing really strange happens, before, during or after. Then there are the negative experiences, like those above. Every once in a while, however, there is a Ouija story with a happy ending. "Bee" had such an experience - a rather remarkable one, too. Bee had been playing the Ouija with her mother back in 1997. Inexplicably, and in response to no particular question, it repeatedly spelled out the name "Randy." It then further explained that Randy was Bee's soul mate, that he was from Maryland and that they would meet sometime in the future. At the time, Bee was not only already married (and his name wasn't Randy), she was suffering from cancer and was undergoing chemo treatments. She was sick and her hair was falling out, so she wasn't feeling very hopeful about meeting this Prince Charming. But the Ouija knew...

THE PREDICTION

Three months later, I was separated from my husband and decided to go horseback riding with my mother. Her best friends of eight years were with her, and with them their son (I never knew they had). We started talking and I asked him what his name was, he replied, "My name is Randy." Shocked, I said, "Where are you from?" He replied, "Maryland." I grabbed my mother, took her aside and told her what this man had just said to me, recalling the Ouija board message a few months earlier. That day we met, he somehow overlooked my sickness and fell in love with me. He has never left my side since that day in June of 1997. We are now very happily married and are the very best of friends. He IS my soul mate and the Ouija board couldn't have been more accurate. (Read the complete story.)
