Has a Mexican bridal shop been using an embalmed corpse as a mannequin?

Via examiner.com by Mark Schiff

We all know that mannequins can be a little creepy. The vacant look. The not-at-all-lifelike poses. The literal fashion slavery. Necessary as they may be, there’s something deeply unsettling about these plastic humanoids, which is why they made a horror movie about them in the ‘80s (a movie called Mannequin has to be a horror flick, right?). Now, a new story posted on Roadtrippers suggests that a mannequin that’s been posing in the window of a bridal shop in Chihuahua, Mexico for almost 85 years may in fact be an embalmed corpse, which pretty much confirms our long-simmering fears.

The evidence pointing toward the embalming theory is highly circumstantial and rooted in local mythology, but there’s no denying that the mannequin on display at La Popular is disarmingly lifelike compared to the generic plastic faced dummies in most American malls. Also, her hands are extremely detailed. And only select employees are allowed to change her clothes, and it’s all done behind closed doors. And rumors of supernatural activity at the bridal shop are pervasive. But other than that, there’s no real proof that this mannequin was once an actual human being, so don’t freak out.

The humannequin even boasts an origin story that’s both cliched and entirely plausible because, seriously, look at those hands. According to local legend, the daughter of the shop’s owner passed away of a Black Widow spider bite on her wedding day (we told you it was cliched) and soon after, townspeople began to notice the similarities between the mannequin (which even has a nickname in “La Pascualita”) and the proprietor's deceased daughter. There was local outrage, of course, but by the time the owner got around to denying the allegations, the story had taken hold.

Now, the more rational among us might point out that there’s the issue of preventing a corpse from decomposing as it sits in a store window for the better part of a century. However, those people are obviously wrong, because even though I don’t speak a word of Spanish, this video appears to confirm that, yeah, dead body, case closed.

La Popular has become something of a tourist destination, so you can head down to Chihuahua and check out the possible corpse bride for yourself. Just remember to use the same decorum as you would at an open-casket funeral: look, but don’t touch.
