Two men meet to find they're living identical lives

Every now and then we ask ourselves questions that are throw up more questions than answers – and bizarre experiences of coincidence are a very good example.

Have you ever been thinking about someone you haven't seen in a while, and out of the blue they call or turn up at that very moment? Well, some people call it psychic, just plain luck or maybe coincidence.

There have been some amazing stories of coincidence from all around the world, and from the beginning of man's time on this planet, and we in Stoke-on-Trent have had some pretty wonderful stories of coincidence ourselves.

Once such story was told to me by a gentleman called Bill.

Bill lived in Blurton and had been there for 20 of his 49 years. He was married with a wife called Penny and a son called Tom.

It was the summer of 1998 and the weather was scorching, making for a great holiday season. This year Bill and his family were heading to Shell Island in Wales.

Shell Island is just that; a small island that becomes detached from the mainland during high tide. The sea level rises to cover a small course way and this in turn keeps the holiday makers who are on the island at the time...trapped.

Bill and his family had visited Shell Island on many occasions and always had a great holiday there.

In fact, Bill had a routine that he liked to perform while staying at this particular campsite; he would get up early and walk the shell washed beach at first light.

Bill felt this was the perfect way to start his day before returning to a full English breakfast at the site.

This particular morning, Bill was strolling along the beach, breathing in the fresh salty air and feeling the sand between his sandaled toes.

As he continued his walk, he saw a figure of a man walking his way, the two gentlemen exchanged hellos and made light and pleasant conversation about the island and the stunning weather they were both enjoying with their respective families.

Bill and the other man continued on their separate journeys and thought nothing more of their encounter.

Two weeks later, and back in Stoke-on-Trent, Bill had applied for a new job and was sitting in the waiting area to be called through to the pottery manufacturer that he had applied to work for.

A voice came over the Tannoy asking Bill to go through to the room where the interview was to be conducted.

As the door opened, Bill immediately recognised the man – it was the gentleman from the beach – and they were both shocked to see each other.

"Small world." said the gentleman.

"It sure is." replied Bill.

"I see we also share the same first name." the man added.

But that wasn't the only coincidence.

Both the men had married women called Penny and had sons called Tom. They even drove the same cars and had holidayed at the same location for a number of years.

The two men had shared almost the same identical lives, but had never met each other.

So as you can see, coincidence, kindred spirits or some other form of divine connection do seem to exist in one shape or another.

Or do we all have someone else living an identical life to our own that we have yet to meet?
