5-foot shark caught along north shore of Lake Pontchartrain

Via nola.com by Robert Rhoden

A fisherman reeled in a 5-foot shark in Lake Pontchartrain at the mouth of Bayou Liberty/Bonfouca near Slidell, according to an item posted Wednesday (Aug. 19) on the St. Tammany Parish government's Facebook page.

The unnamed fisherman said he had fished that spot for 26 years and had never seen such a shark, the posting said. The man caught the shark while fishing from a pontoon boat.

The post did not say what the fisherman did with the shark after bringing him to the boat.

Sharks are commonly caught in the lake, particularly in late summer.

In fact, someone responded to the Facebook post with a photo of a 3- to 4-foot shark that the poster said was caught recently at the Mandeville harbor. That shark was released, the commenter said.
