The entire volume of sand at Porthleven in Cornwall had mysteriously disappeared due to a freak tide.
A popular tourist destination for those visiting Cornwall, Porthleven
has long been known for its sandy beaches and picturesque views.
After
a severe high tide on Wednesday however locals awoke to discover that
all the sand had completely disappeared overnight leaving nothing but
exposed rocks and seaweed.
While fluctuations in the sand levels along the coast are nothing unusual nobody had ever seen the whole beach vanish before.
"The beach has never had this little sand in living memory," said Councillor Andrew Wallis.
Stranger
still however was the fact that, within the space of just a few hours, a
second high tide deposited the entire volume of sand back on to the
beach again, returning it to its original state.
"The beach is an
ever changing environment and we’ve seen a lot of sand movement in
recent years as a result of the weather," said a spokesman for the Royal
National Lifeboat Institution.
"The continual changing
topography of beaches can present new hazards so people should always be
mindful of this if they’re visiting the coast and take extra care."
