This past summer, I received an email from a Marlton resident who found Jersey Unique Minds Paranormal Society through reading "Paranormal Corner."
In July, myself, JUMPS Founder and CEO Doug Hogate Jr. and investigator Tim McGuire traveled to her home to try and help her with the unexplained experiences she was having.
The homeowner, Jean Durkin - a psychic medium by trade - said she and her daughter, who is also sensitive, felt several spirits in the home.
During the investigation, Jean and her daughter joined us and were communicating telepathically with the spirit that was present.
At the same time, we were using our audio recorders which captured some EVPs (electronic voice phenomenon) that corresponded with what Jean's daughter was picking up in real time.
At the beginning of the investigation, Hogate asked a question. At the same time, Jean's daughter had told us the man had responded.
Later, while listening to the audio recordings, Hogate captured a deep, dark voice responding to his question, just seconds before the teen-ager confirmed that he had spoken.
This continued throughout the investigation, which opened our eyes to the real ability possessed by Jean and her daughter.
Hogate and JUMPS have kept in touch with Jean and her family.
Just a few weeks ago, Jean once again contacted Hogate, but this time, it was for a very different reason.
Jean insisted that she come down a meet with the entire JUMPS team.
"I get a lot of good energy from this team," Jean said to a group of 12 investigators plus a wife, two moms and one daughter. "The other side wants you to know that what's going on with you guys is important."
Jean explained that she had gotten messages from her spirit guides, saying that our mission of investigating people's homes and helping them is good and important.
However, when doing this kind of work, we need to protect ourselves, she said.
"We deal with different kinds of spirits," Jean said. "Mine are happy. They've already crossed over and want to just pop back in to say they love you or prove they're around. But there are some spirits who haven't."
Those are the ones we deal with.
The ones who are stuck here and possibly angry or miserable.
"There is bad energy around and a lot of what gets stuck here is bad energy," Jean explained. "That's why you have to protect yourself."
Jean said the spirits wanted her to tell the team three things:
- Watch what you say - "Whatever you put out there, that's what the other side hears. They don't know sarcasm and don't hear 'Oh I didn't mean that,'" Jean said. She explained we should never ask spirits to do things to us personally. "Reword it," she said. "You can say 'Prove it to me' just don't call anything upon yourself."
- Protection - "Protect yourself before you go," she said. "Some of you have brought friends home with you already, right?" Yes, some of us have. She explained we all need to take a deep breath, close our eyes and picture a ball of bright, white light - resembling a bubble - coming down from heaven and wrapping itself all around our bodies. "Call on St. Michael to protect you from anything that's not positive energy," she said. "It's going to get darker before it gets better."
- Help the lost to crossover - "This team, in particular, is doing great things," Jean said. "The next level for you is helping those cross over who need to be crossed over." She said we can lead them to the light, and tell them it's OK to go. Jean is going to continue to work with us, and education us in taking that next step.
"I'm extremely excited, as she is very gifted, accurate and an all-around great lady," Hogate said.
JUMPS consists of investigators from 19 to 60; from mothers to fathers; from stay at home moms to professionals.
"It's your personalities that bond you together," she said. "This is your purpose. You were all brought together for a purpose."
That purpose is multi-fold, she said, including helping people, helping spirits, and showing the world that there is something more than just what we see and hear on a daily basis.
"What's happening in the world is, there's more of an awareness of the other side," Jean said. "You're job is to show everyone that there is something there. Make them aware."
