Bulgarian Academy of Sciences to study UFOs and Extraterrestrial Intelligence

According to a recent story in Novinite.com (1), the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Space Studies Institute held a conference on the subject of UFOs and extraterrestrial intelligence (2).

Prof. Lachezar Filipov announced that the BAS intends to establish a working group to study the phenomenon. The conference and the working group were inspired by the testimony of an unidentified “serious man” who claims to have seen a flying saucer flying over Sofia’s Kremikovtsi district in October, 2014. The unidentified witness seems to have been the only one to have noticed the object.

Bulgaria has been the venue of a number of recent UFO sightings in recent years. The Huffington Post (3) reported on an incident that took place in August, 2013 in the night sky over Haskovo, Bulgaria.

A former FBI agent named Ben Hensen, who has worked as the lead investigator of the Syfy Channel’s “Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files”, suggests that the video footage of the Haskovo UFO was not faked.

UFOs, or unidentified flying objects, have been part of lore throughout history. The conflation between UFOs and possible alien spacecraft has become popular since the Second World War.
The idea of aliens clandestinely visiting earth for unknown and possibly nefarious reasons has been the subject of scientific speculation and science fiction for decades. The idea of UFOs being alien visitors has permeated popular culture with TV shows like “The X Files” and movies like “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”.

UFO lore has been bound up with the urban legend that the government knows about alien visitors but is, for whatever reason, covering them up.

Indeed, an entire mythology has risen up surrounding the idea that UFOs are evidence of alien visitors to Earth.

The most widely documented case of an alleged UFO was the crash of what is said to be an alien spacecraft at Roswell, New Mexico in 1947 (4). The story alleges that the United States Air Force recovered the dead crew and has been studying the craft and the alien corpses at a secret base near Area 51 ever since.

Another aspect of the UFO mythos consists of accounts of aliens abducting human beings and performing often painful experiments on them before releasing them (5).

The first documented case of alien abduction concerned a couple named Barney and Betty Hill, alleged to have taken place in 1961. The scientific consensus is that these accounts are either bogus or are the result of implanted memories brought on by an unrelated psychological trauma.

Scientific studies of UFO sightings, such as the United States Air Force’s Project Blue Book (6), have concluded that the vast majority can be explained either by aircraft, space satellites, or some kind of easily understood natural phenomenon.

A few UFO sightings have turned out to be hoaxes. A small number of sightings remain unexplained, which has led a number of UFO enthusiasts to suggest that these must be alien spacecraft. Skeptics counter that the small number of unexplained sightings are still likely natural phenomena but with insufficient data available to fully explain them.

Official government studies of UFOs ended in 1969, and the government publicly concluding that further study of the objects would have no scientific value and that in any case they were not a concern to national security. A number of private groups are still studying the UFO phenomenon. The debate over whether any of them represent alien visitors is ongoing.

Most scientists have long ago concluded that intelligent alien life exists elsewhere in the universe. The number of Earth-like planets where life could evolve is considered so vast that the law of averages dictates that aliens could exist elsewhere. But the idea that aliens are systematically visiting Earth is considered problematic at best.
