Statues of angels decapitated in west London cemeteries

Thugs have been sneaking into cemeteries and decapitating statues of angels in west London.

Police have stepped up patrols at churchyards in the Hammersmith and Fulham area after nine historic statues were vandalised.

The incidents began on October 27 when five statues were damaged, including two decapitations, in Bishops Park overnight.

On November 9, the night of Remembrance Sunday, four statues were beheaded, including one of a bronze figure, in Margravine Cemetery, Fulham Cemetery and All Saints Church’s cemetery.

Police have launched an appeal to try and trace the culprit by asking people to get in contact if they see anybody climbing into cemeteries.

After looking at CCTV footage from cameras at Margravine Cemetery they believe the vandal is a lone male.

A spokesman for Hammersmith and Fulham Council, said: “We are deeply dismayed by this vandal’s senseless and completely insensitive acts of destruction. We have stepped up our parks police patrols to bring this heartless individual to justice. I encourage anyone with information to come forward and help our investigation.”

Anyone with information can call 0800 3655 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
