Interest in the unexplained has been on the rise in recent years to the point where the majority of people in some countries are more likely to believe in the paranormal than in a religious deity.
This shift is echoed in results published this week from a recent poll conducted by Ripley's Believe It or Not! in London.
Out of 1,500 adults the survey found that 51% believed in extraterrestrial visitation while only 25% believed in God.
The most popular belief was in ghosts and the paranormal with a 55% share of the vote. Angels also featured prominently in the results with 27% of adults believing in them.
The same questions were also posed to 500 children aged 8-12 with the results showing that belief in extraterrestrials ( 64% ) and ghosts ( 64% ) also trumped a belief in God ( 33% ).
"According to the results it's clearly not just children who have an open mind when it comes to other life forms and keeping an open mind," said Ripley's general manager Natascha Crump.
"We live in the age of science and turn to it for most of our answers, but the results show that many of us still hold belief in things that might exist outside of our world and beyond our understanding."
