According to a video on YouTube, a fireball appeared in the sky over the Irkutsk region of Siberia and crashed in a tremendous explosion on Friday night. So far, details are sketchy, but this picture is claimed to be a snapshot of the object as it hurtled through the darkened sky.
It's not the first time this has happened. Recent reports, some refuted by government officials, have recounted a giant, metallic cylinder falling on the roof of a Siberian house. Villagers claim it's part of a rocket. Space agency administrators have yet to publicly make up their minds.
Perhaps the most famous incident was the Tanguska explosion in July 1908. A fireball was seen by many residents of the Russian wilderness area. But it was several years before scientists could get close enough to investigate.
They were not able to find evidence of either a meteorite or a much larger asteroid. But the devastation to the area was undeniable. Trees were flattened for miles around, and it's taken decades for the area to fully recover.
This incident seems to have all the same earmarks, but with today's advanced technology, scientists should be able to get to the area much quicker. What will they find? A meteorite? An asteroid? A UFO?
