Season of the Witch – review

We're gonna need more holy water!" The ashen-faced priest's panicky assessment of the situation in this witchy-plaguey-exorcism fantasy thriller turns out to be more or less correct. Nicolas Cage and Ron Perlman play 14th-century knights – medieval badasses who are recruited by the church for a special job: a suspected witch, played by Claire Foy, has to be transported to a monastery to be interrogated, and they are the only guys tough enough to take the task on. Is this woman a victim of misogynist group hysteria? Or is she actually …? Gulp! It's entertaining in a cheerfully ridiculous way, though Cage fans will be disappointed that he does not really lose his rag, despite some serious provocation from the Lord of Darkness.
