‘Ghost Hunters’ investigates Absecon Lighthouse haunting claims

Shore News Today-- The Atlantic Paranormal Society, aka TAPS, from the SyFy Network series “Ghost Hunters” recently completed a week of investigations at the Absecon Lighthouse investigating claims that the local lighthouse is haunted for an episode of the show due to air in February.

“Ghost Hunters” is an hour-long weekly reality show that follows a group of real-life paranormal researchers as they investigate haunted claims across the country. The Absecon Lighthouse sent TAPS an invitation to explore the rich, historical site after experiencing some strange phenomena.

Perhaps the earliest recorded story of paranormal activity dates back to 1905 when a newspaper article reported that the Jersey Devil had been seen by the head lighthouse keeper at the top of the 171-foot tower.

Since The Inlet Public Private Association renovated the lighthouse tower, rebuilt the Keeper’s Cottage and re-opened it to visitors, several volunteers have shared stories of being alone on the property, but hearing footsteps, smelling smoke and even seeing a few ghostly apparitions.

“Ghost Hunters” agreed to investigate the Absecon Lighthouse and did a week’s worth of filming, hoping to provide some evidence to support or debunk the claims.

While the show’s producers have revealed their findings to the lighthouse staff, the curious will have to tune into the show’s sixth season, beginning in February on the SyFy Network, to see what they found.

Absecon Lighthouse is a state-owned historic property administered by the non-profit Inlet Public/Private Association. Located at 31 S. Rhode Island Ave. in Atlantic City, it is open to visitors Thursdays through Mondays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
