Do you fear Friday the 13th?

Friday the 13th: Things you should know

Today is the day for people who suffer from paraskevidekatriaphobia to try to keep their cool — but it won’t be easy. Why? The condition is a deep, blinding fear of Friday the 13th. And however irrational the fear may seem, it has some concrete consequences.

The year 2012 is an especially bad year for those who fear this day. Most years have one or two Friday the 13ths, but this year, there are three. And get this: They are 13 weeks apart. (January 13th, April 13th, July 13th).

It has been estimated that up to $800 million is lost every Friday the 13th because many people think it is an unlucky day to travel, go to work or do pretty much anything. In fact, it is said that as many as 21 million people fear this day.

And according to this Daily Mail article, a 1993 study in the United States found that the risk of admission to hospitals on Friday the 13th as a result of “a transport accident may be increased by as much as 52 percent.” The study was detailed in an article that was called “Is Friday 13th bad for your health?” and published in the British Medical Journal.

Vatican and Oxford University ancient texts go online

Digitised collections of Greek and Hebrew manuscripts and early printed books to be made available free online

The Oxford University and Vatican libraries are to jointly digitise 1.5m pages of ancient texts and make them available free online.

The libraries said the digitised collections will centre on three subject areas: Greek manuscripts, 15th-century printed books and Hebrew manuscripts and early printed books.

The areas have been chosen for the strength of the collections in both libraries and their importance for scholarship in their respective fields.

Family aghast at guest ghost

Couple sues over paranormal activity.

Just one week after Josue Chinchilla and Michele Callan moved into their new home in Toms River, the couple and her two children plodded into the lobby of a local hotel about 1:15 a.m. and asked for a room.

As soon as the family had settled into the three-bedroom ranch at the corner of Terrace and Lowell avenues on March 1, they began to suspect they were not its only tenants.

The family would come home and find their clothes and towels ejected from the closets and strewn over the floors. Doors would creak open and slam close in unoccupied areas of the house. Lights switched on and off without human intervention. At night, footsteps could be heard from the kitchen after everyone was tucked in and unintelligible whispering seemed to fade in and out of thin air, according to the couple.

The most disturbing and consistent phenomenon, they claim, is the sound that comes through the vents to the basement — the muffled din of something lumbering seven feet below their feet.

Could true artificial intelligence be near?

Interest is now reviving in artificial intelligences that are able to imitate humans, thanks to revolutionary advances in technology, such as microchips that mimic brain cells, researchers say.

The idea of computers advanced enough to perfectly mimic humans was most famously proposed by British mathematician Alan Turing, who helped the Allies win World War II by breaking top-secret Nazi codes.

"Turing was without any question one of the founders of the modern computer age," said Robert French, research director of cognitive science at the French National Center for Scientific Research."He was an absolute genius. I don't use that word very often, but he was."

Turing raised the possibility of advanced machine intelligences with his "Turing test." Can a computer, he asked, impersonate a person well enough in a text conversation to be indistinguishable from a human? If so, one could say that computer is at least as intelligent as a human.

Meteor streaks across Midwestern Skies

CHICAGO — Skywatchers over a wide area of the Midwest got a brief but spectacular light show as a fireball streaked across the sky Wednesday night.

Reports about the fireball began flooding law enforcement agencies as well as National Weather Serviceoffices from Milwaukee to St. Louis at around 10 p.m. CT (11 p.m. ET). Sightings were reported in Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois and Missouri.

"A large meteorite could have caused the brilliant fireball that has been reported," the National Weather Service’s Milwaukee office said in statement. In Iowa, officials reported a prolonged sonic boom related to the display. The University of Wisconsin at Madison captured the meteor's fall in a time-lapse Webcam sequence.

Charles Manson Denied Parole, Ends His Bid for Republican Presidential Nomination (humor)

KINGS COUNTY, CA (The Borowitz Report) – Serial killer Charles Manson was denied parole yesterday, effectively ending his bid for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.

With Mr. Manson no longer a contender, the path appears to be clear for former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney to become the party’s nominee.

Perhaps in recognition of this development, Mr. Romney unveiled a new campaign slogan today: “Sorry, But You Have No Other Choices Now.”

As for the rest of the GOP field, former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum suspended his campaign this week, saying that he wanted “to spend more time with the voices in my head.”

And former House Speaker Newt Gingrich wrote a $500 check on an account that had no money in it, in the first sign that he might be qualified to be President.

Elsewhere, a Fox News spokesman blasted a mole who had previously worked for the network: “At Fox News we have zero tolerance for someone who tells the truth.”

Did 1976 Viking mission discover life on Mars?

Scientists believe they've found evidence for life on Mars - in data collected 36 years ago.

A new analysis of results from experiments carried out by the 1976 Viking mission to Mars indicates the presence of microbes in the Martian soil.

In three experiments carried out by the two Viking probes, a cocktail of nutrients was added to Martian soil, in the hope that any microbes present would consume the nutrients and release CO2 or methane.

But when one of the experiements appeared to show positive results by producing CO2, the scientists concluded that the cause was probably an oxidizing agent within the soil, as the other experiments failed to find ant organic molecules in the soil.

Shadow Government: Wells Fargo launders drug cartel money, invests in for-profit prisons

Last year, Wells Fargo paid a fine they could easily afford when they had purchased Wachovia bank, after Wachovia got busted laundering $110 Million dollars of drug money for foreign drug cartels. If you're keeping score at home that means if you get busted smoking a joint you go to jail, but if you get busted laundering millions of dollars in drug cartel money you get a slap on the wrist. Now, here's the catch, if you get caught smoking pot and go to jail, Wells Fargo will make a profit off of that too thanks to America's growing for-profit prison system.

For more details on how the banksters figured out how to flood America with illegal drugs for their own profit and then make money on the back end of the deal when you get sent to jail, make sure to read this article at Salon.com . . .

I took to mean the temperature of the SFP, but it is more likely that Matsumoto suddenly switched back to talking about the temperature of the Reactor 1 dry well. Sorry for the confusion. A lot of viewers apparently thought Matsumoto was talking about the Reactor SFP like I did. So, it was the Reactor 1 dry well temperature that started to rise noticeably starting 4AM on April 13, 2012. No word yet on exactly what the temperature is in the Reactor 4 SFP.
