Millions of Hindus converged Wednesday, April 14, on the banks of the Ganges River for Kumbh Mela, the world's largest religious festival.
The New York Times reported that an estimated 10 million people entered the river for one of the most auspicious days of the festival, which ends on April 28. Devotees believe that bathing in the river cleanses them of sin and frees them from the cycle of life and rebirth.
Kumbh Mela began on January 13 in Haridwar, a city in Northern India. The festival is held every three years and rotates between four Indian cities: Prayag (Allahabad), Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik.

Trio arrested over suspected human sacrifice to Kali
Police in eastern India have arrested three men in a suspected case of human sacrifice, including two former colleagues of the victim, who was found beheaded in a temple.
The naked, decapitated body of the man was found last Wednesday in a temple in the Birbhum district of eastern West Bengal, about 200 kilometres from state capital Kolkata. The dismembered body was found near the holiest part of the temple, which was dedicated to the Hindu goddess of power, Kali.
The head was smeared with red vermilion and surrounded by flowers and incense sticks.
"Three men, all in their late 30s, have been arrested over a week in connection with the beheading," Birbhum district police chief Rabindranath Mukherjee said.
Mr Rabindranath says two of the arrested men were employed in a factory where the victim had once worked and the third was a local labourer.
"We cannot say at this stage if it was a human sacrifice or not," he said.
Next James Bond Film Suspended Indefinitely
LONDON — Producers say work on the next James Bond film has been halted indefinitely because of uncertainty about the future of distributor Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc.
Producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli say development of the movie was suspended after MGM failed to find a buyer. They said late Monday they did not know when work would resume.
MGM put itself up for sale after a slump in DVD sales and a lack of hits left it unable to manage a $3.7 billion debt.
Wilson and Broccoli's EON Productions has produced 22 Bond thrillers since 1962. The new film, known only as "Bond 23," had been due for release in 2011 or 2012.
Bond actor Daniel Craig says he has confidence in the producers and looks forward to production resuming.
