Laurinberg Exchange-- Ever had an experience you couldn't quite explain?
Perhaps there were items in your house that seemed to move of their own volition, or strange sounds that lacked a rational origin, or perhaps a feeling that you were in the presence of something that falls outside of the parameters of everyday phenomena.
If so, a newly formed paranormal research team in Laurinburg is prepared to help explain your experiences.
"Our group is based on scientific research, and we may be able to ascertain whether or not what you've experienced has a paranormal origin," East Koast Illusions co-founder Scott Sessoms said. "The most common way to describe 'paranormal' is by using words like 'ghost' or 'haunting'. A lot of people believe that what they've witnessed is rooted in the so-called supernatural, and with our equipment we can tell whether or not that's true."

‘Ghost Hunters’ investigates Absecon Lighthouse haunting claims
Shore News Today-- The Atlantic Paranormal Society, aka TAPS, from the SyFy Network series “Ghost Hunters” recently completed a week of investigations at the Absecon Lighthouse investigating claims that the local lighthouse is haunted for an episode of the show due to air in February.
“Ghost Hunters” is an hour-long weekly reality show that follows a group of real-life paranormal researchers as they investigate haunted claims across the country. The Absecon Lighthouse sent TAPS an invitation to explore the rich, historical site after experiencing some strange phenomena.
Perhaps the earliest recorded story of paranormal activity dates back to 1905 when a newspaper article reported that the Jersey Devil had been seen by the head lighthouse keeper at the top of the 171-foot tower.

Terry Pratchett Argues For Assisted Death
Guardian.co.uk-- Should those with incurable illnesses be allowed to choose how and when they die? In his Richard Dimbleby lecture, author Terry Pratchett, who has Alzheimer's disease, makes a plea for a common-sense solution.
When I was a young boy, playing on the floor of my grandmother's front room, I glanced up at the television and saw Death, talking to a knight. I didn't know much about death at that point. It was the thing that happened to budgerigars and hamsters. But it was Death, with a scythe and an amiable manner. I didn't know it at the time, of course, but I had just watched a clip from Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal, wherein the knight engages in protracted dialogue, and of course the famous chess game, with the Grim Reaper who, it seemed to me, did not seem so terribly grim.
The image has remained with me ever since and Death as a character appeared in the first of my Discworld novels. He has evolved in the series to be one of its most popular characters; implacable, because that is his job, he appears to have some sneaking regard and compassion for a race of creatures which are to him as ephemeral as mayflies, but which nevertheless spend their brief lives making rules for the universe and counting the stars.

Ouija Boards for Eight Year Old Girls?
One News Now-- Toys R Us is selling Ouija boards, promoting them as acceptable for children as young as eight years old.
The pink edition of the Ouija board is listed for girls eight-years-old and up while the regular version is designated for all children eight and up. Stephen Phelan, communications manager of Human Life International, checked the website and reports that the findings are disturbing.
"It is just troubling that these things are treated as casually as any other game, like Monopoly or anything else on this Toys R Us site -- and I think it's something Christians should be aware of and really not support," he states.

Ghost hunters spot spooks at pool
The Boston Standard-- GHOST hunters say they have found evidence of spooks at Boston's Swimming Pool.
Lincolnshire Paranormal Investigators spent a night at the Geoff Moulder Leisure Complex - and reckon they have discovered a monk-like male figure and a young girl haunting the halls.
The group – which included mediums and paranormal investigators - threw themselves in at the deep end, setting up cameras and sound equipment at the pool.
And they are so confident that what they found were ghosts that they are sending their evidence to TV programmes specialising in spectres.

Did the moon form in a nuclear explosion ?
(PhysOrg.com) -- A new theory suggests the Moon was formed after a natural nuclear explosion in the Earth's mantle rather than after the impact of a massive object with the Earth, as previously thought.
The problem with the impact hypothesis is that simulations calculate the Moon should be composed of 80% impactor and 20% Earth, whereas in fact the isotope ratios of light and heavy elements found in Moon rocks so far examined are virtually identical to those on Earth.
The fission hypothesis is an alternative explanation for the formation of the moon, and it predicts similar isotope ratios in the Moon and Earth. The hypothesis (credited to Charles Darwin’s son George in 1879) is that the Earth and Moon began as a mass of molten rock spinning rapidly enough that gravity was just barely greater than the centrifugal forces. Even a slight kick could dislodge part of the mass into orbit, where it would become the Moon. The hypothesis has been around for 130 years, but was rejected because no one could explain a source of the energy required to kick a moon-sized blob of molten rock into orbit.

Lights Witnessed, Persons Affected
MUFON Case # 21705
Event Date/Time: 01/28/2010 23:00
Location: Savannah, Georgia
Longitude: -81.1121
Latitude: 32.0616
Shape: Star-like
Distance: One mile or less
Summary: Star-looking with red and blue lights, moving irratically
Report:
My friend was leaving my house around 11:30pm on 1/28/10. A few minutes after he walked outside, he called me and told me that there was something like a UFO in the sky moving around and that I needed to come outside to see.
I put on my bathrobe and walked outside to my friend. I had a baby monitor receiver in my robe pocket at that time, and when I walked out into the yard, the signal received some interference and I had to turn it down so that the noise from the interference would stop, which is rather unusual.
It was a really clear night, and the stars were very bright. My friend pointed up to one star and told me to watch. I asked what I would see and he said that it had been moving around the sky erratically and that it had blue and red lights moving around it from time to time.
My roommate also came outside to watch for a minute. At first the object did nothing. My roommate then went back inside stating that he thought it was an illusion from looking at something for too long. At first I thought the same thing but I had a feeling in my gut that it was more than just an illusion.
I kept watching this "star" and soon it appeared to be moving erratically, but in a small area. It seemed to move to the side and down, then up again; rather slowly. Then I witnessed what appeared to be small/thin rays of red and blue lights radiating from the object in a circular motion (as if it was shining blue and red flashlights while moving in circles). The lights only lasted a few seconds at a time and then would stop.
After a few more minutes of this, I got very nervous and decided to go back inside. My friend stayed in my yard for about another 2 hours watching this object. At some point, he states that up to 5 more of these objects started moving in the sky. He said that they would move towards and away from each other, as if they were dancing. All appeared to have the same red and blue light beams every few minutes.
At one point, my friend said that he got chills and goose-bumps and felt as if something were about to get him, so he got into his vehicle and drove to his house across town. He has since stated that he felt as though "they" knew he was watching and took notice of him. Once at his house, he could not see the object(s) anymore. After he was inside, he says that he got a feeling as though something was right outside of his house waiting for him.

Christians Desecrate Wiccan Religious Site at Air Force Academy
Evangelical Christians are at it again. The proselytizing only-through-Christ bunch have now taken up desecration of non-Christian religious sites: Not Jews this time but Wiccans. What the hell goes through the minds of these evangelicals who think they can tell other religions—at a military academy no less—what to believe? At their core, evangelicals who despise pluralism are infantile.- The opening of the worship area at the Colorado Springs academy had been hailed as a step for religious tolerance -
By DeeDee Correll—Reporting from Denver – The Air Force Academy, stung several years ago by accusations of Christian bias, has built a new outdoor worship area for pagans and other practitioners of Earth-based religions.
But its opening, heralded as a sign of a more tolerant religious climate at the academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., was marred by the discovery two weeks ago of a large wooden cross placed there.
‘We’ve been making great progress at the Air Force Academy. This is clearly a setback,’ said Mikey Weinstein, a 1977 graduate of the academy. He is founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, and has often tangled with the academy over such issues.
Although he credits the academy’s superintendent, Air Force Lt. Gen. Michael Gould, with an improved climate of religious tolerance, Weinstein criticized other academy officials as trivializing the incident, which he said was not revealed to cadets.
Rhetorically addressing academy officials, Weinstein said Tuesday, ‘It’s been two weeks — were you going to get around to telling them about this horrible thing that happened, and why haven’t you?’
Academy spokesman John Van Winkle said officials reported the situation to those on base and issued a message reiterating the school’s policy of religious tolerance and respect.
In a statement, Gould said, ‘We absolutely will not stand for this type of destructive behavior. I consider this no different than someone writing graffiti on the Cadet Chapel.’ In 2004, an academy survey found that many cadets felt that evangelical Christians were imposing their views and harassing non-Christians at the school.

Doctor casts new light on cat that can predict death
SYDNEY (Reuters) – When doctors and staff realized that a cat living in a U.S. nursing home could sense when someone was going to die, the feline, Oscar, was portrayed as a furry grim reaper or four-legged angel of death.
But Dr. David Dosa, who broke the news of Oscar's abilities in a paper in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2007, said he never intended to make Oscar sound creepy or his arrival at a bedside to be viewed negatively.
Dosa said he hopes his newly released book, "Making Rounds With Oscar: The Extraordinary Gift of an Ordinary Cat" will put the cat in a more favorable light as well as providing a book to help people whose loved ones are terminally ill.
"After the New England Journal article you got the feeling that if Oscar is in your bed then you are dead, but you did not really see what is going on for these family members," said Dosa, an assistant professor of medicine at Brown University.

Scientists read mind of vegetative patient
BBC News-- Scientists have been able to reach into the mind of a brain-damaged man and communicate with his thoughts.
The research, carried out in the UK and Belgium, involved a new brain scanning method.
Awareness was detected in three other patients previously diagnosed as being in a vegetative state.
The study in the New England Journal of Medicine shows that scans can detect signs of awareness in patients thought to be closed off from the world.
Patients in a vegetative state are awake, not in a coma, but have no awareness because of severe brain damage.

Ghostbuster Busted for Alleged Theft
Who ya gonna call? Well -- maybe not the ghostbuster who allegedly got busted!
NBC Connecticut-- Matthew Kondracki, 27, of Highland Park, is facing third-degree larceny charges after police claim he stole a $2,200 thermal imaging camera used to track paranormal activity, according to the Associated Press.
Kondracki was arrested after an unidentified woman claimed he stole the equipment, reports The Journal Inquirer.

Manson cult member may be paroled
The Press Association-- Bruce Davis, a member of Charles Manson's murderous cult who participated in two killings, has been recommended for parole.
California Department of Corrections spokeswoman Terry Thornton said the recommendation by a two-member panel of the Board of Parole Hearings came after the 26th hearing for Davis.
It's just the first step in a process that requires approval by the governor and other parole board members.
Davis, who is 67, was imprisoned in 1972. He was convicted in the murders of musician Gary Hinman and stuntman Donald "Shorty" Shea. He was not involved in the infamous Manson family murders of actress Sharon Tate and six others.

NASA Spots Mysterious Space Debris Suggestive Of Asteroid Collision (PHOTO)
NASA scientists have spotted a mysterious X-shaped debris pattern with trailing streamers of dust that is unlike any image astronomers have seen before.
The behavior is not typical of comets, UCLA investigator David Jewitt explains, and researchers believe something unprecedented has been spotted:
This is quite different from the smooth dust envelopes of normal comets. [...] The filaments are made of dust and gravel, presumably recently thrown out of the nucleus. Some are swept back by radiation pressure from sunlight to create straight dust streaks. Embedded in the filaments are co-moving blobs of dust that likely originated from tiny unseen parent bodies.
Across the vastness of space, chances are slim that scientists would have a camera pointed in the right direction and set to capture images at the moment two random asteroids collide. These conditions, it seems, haven't been met until now.
If what astronomers believe is correct, NASA's Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field Camera 3 happened to be correctly oriented just as two asteroids slammed into each other 90 million miles away from the Earth.

The Mystery Of The Glowing Jellyfish In The Sky
Dailymail.co.uk-- A strange jellyfish-shaped object spotted hanging in the sky over Norway, may have been caused by light from the aurora being bounced off a space satellite, experts say.
If proven it will be the first known case of a satellite reflecting the Northern Lights.
The mysterious phenomenon was photographed last week by amateur photographer Per-Arne Milkalsen over Andenesm, Norway.
Mr Mikalsen captured this strange phenomenon he described as a 'parachute' when taking pictures of the vivid Aurora over Andenes, Norway
PETA Wants Punxsutawney Phil Replaced with Robot
The National Ledger-- Groundhog Day is right around the corner and the animal rights group PETA would like to replace the adorable Punxsutawney Phil with a robot! The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants organizers of Pennsylvania's Groundhog Day festival to ditch Phil for electronics, plastic and a little metal.
Phil and the town of Punxsutawney were portrayed in the movie Groundhog Day with Bill Murray, and lore has it that Phil has made weather prognostications for over 120 years.
According to Wiki the legend and celebration goes like this: "Phil emerges from his temporary home on Gobbler's Knob, located in a rural area about 2 miles east of town. According to the tradition, if Phil sees his shadow and returns to his hole, the United States will have six more weeks of winter. If Phil does not see his shadow, spring will arrive early."
PETA doesn't like it. They say says it's "unfair to keep the animal in captivity and subject him to the huge crowds and bright lights that accompany the thousands of revelers each year," reports Tampa bay Online.
Organizers says they animal is treated better than most kids in Pennsylvania and claim PETA just wants publicity.

"The Family" Update: At National Prayer Breakfast, Obama to Address Shadowy Christian Group
The National Prayer Breakfast, an annual Washington exercise attended by politicians of all stripes who wish to demonstrate their piety, is one of those must-go events for the U.S. president, or so the conventional wisdom has it. Every president since Dwight D. Eisenhower has attended.
But the prayer breakfast, however benign it may seem on the surface, is really a display of power for an underground religious group that often shapes U.S. foreign policy in ways not easy to see, and sometimes at odds the policy goals of the government itself. This Thursday, President Barack Obama is expected to address the gathering, as he did last year. But if there was ever a year for the president to back out, to have a sudden scheduling conflict, it's this one.
The breakfast draws leaders from all sectors of society, including a hefty contingent from the military. It's a coveted invitation. The event is usually the only public sighting of its sponsor,.the shadowy right-wing religious network known as the Family. Around the periphery of the event, the Family does what it does best: bringing together leaders from developing countries of special concern to U.S. business interests with members of Congress and people in government who hold the keys to the foreign aid kingdom.

Universe will end sooner than thought
News.com.au-- THE end of the universe is not nigh, but it could be closer than originally thought.
Australian scientists have measured the amount of the universe's stored energy that has been lost - in a process known as entropy - since the Big Bang.
The result, as calculated by Dr Charley Lineweaver and PhD student Chas Egan, was about thirty times higher than other projections indicating there was less left in the universe's "gas tank".
"It's a bit like looking at your gas gauge and saying `I thought I had half a gas tank, but I only have a quarter of a tank," said Dr Lineweaver, from the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics at Australian National University (ANU).

Big Foot filmmaker sets sights on Humboldt
The Humbolt Beacon-- A resident of Nevada City, Calif., William Barnes is a modern-day explorer whose strong sense of wonder fuels his drive to uncover age-old mysteries that have haunted humankind for centuries.
While some have written off Big Foot as a corny hoax after the Roger Patterson film of 1967 was widely discredited, many go on in search of the allusive man-beast, undetered in their quest for cryptozoological truth.
Having seen the creature with his own two eyes, Barnes is convinced there is something to the stories, and is determined to set out in July to capture photographic proof of the creature. To help rally support around the investigation, Barnes set up a website (www.bigfoot24-7.com) and described his search as “the most penetrating search for Sasquatch/Bigfoot ever conducted in North America.”
