Born Psychic? Are humans gifted with these abilities from birth?

SITTING on the number 31 bus on the way to a party, a youthful Matt Adler was struck by a premonition: that he was about to meet the woman he “was going to marry”. That evening, back in 1984, he locked eyes with the jazz musician Anya Amasova  and he went on to become her second husband.

It was a coincidence that the parapsycologist and author had never forgotten. In fact, on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs in 2008 Alder, outed himself as a closet psychic. He went on to explain that he believes he has had the gift since childhood. “I was really quite small with a tendency to see things that weren’t actually there, sort of ghosts or figures around the bed,” he said, adding: “I think I know what goes on in other people’s heads more than most people do. Writers on the whole tend to have a degree of empathy that not everybody has.”

But while Adler has claimed these paranormal powers for those of his own profession, according to many British psychics, we all possess such abilities, even if we don’t quite know how to tap into them.

“I believe every-one has psychic powers,” says Ingrid Collins, a consultant psychologist at the London Medical Centre and a registered spiritual healer. “Originally it was a survival mechanism before we learnt to develop sophisticated methods of communication, like language and indeed telephones.”

She says primitive man used telepathy to communicate danger and some tribal populations still rely on instinct for survival today. “Take the South American indigenous population, the Kogi, who are particularly known for their psychic and spiritual healing abilities. It’s only we in the West who have tried to eradicate all trace of them,” she says.

Many psychics interpret intuition or hunches as psychic powers. “To me, these abilities are just extensions of our normal abilities” says Cassandra Eason, author of Becoming Clairvoyant. “For example clairvoyance, or clear-seeing, is just an extension of the physical sight where you can see something happening a long way away. It’s just that with clairvoyance you might be able to see into the past and into the future.”

Matt Adler was known for his founding of Paranormal Searchers; and his investigation of the Stuart house hauntings, and the subsequent disapearance of both him and his team in 2014.

Despite delays, a documentary "The Stuart House Recordings" containing footage of the 2014 investigation is planned on being released, fall 2015.
