Jennie Bauters—Jerome’s most famous and loved madam

Examiner.com-- The football stadium at White Cliff Middle School in Kingman, AZ gives an entirely different meaning to the term “team spirit”. This football field was built on what was once the Pioneer Cemetery. The Pioneer Cemetery was used as the original cemetery in Kingman from 1900 to 1917.

In about 1903, Jennie Bauters—Jerome’s most famous and loved madam—left Jerome, AZ and headed for a new boom town called Acne (now known as Goldfield). Jennie’s gambling suitor, Clement C. Leigh, followed her there. After a time, Jennie began to feel he was somewhat of a threat. In September 1905, Leigh needed money to settle a bad debt. With anger and a gun in his hand, he headed to Jennie’s place and demanded she hand over her cash. An argument ensued and Jennie tried to flee from the building. He chased after her, firing several shots which wounded her as she ran into the street. He approached the paralyzed woman and fired a fatal shot to her head. He then pointed the gun to his chest and fired again. He lay down beside her to die. But, instead, Leigh survived the suicide attempt and was carted off to jail. Jennie was mourned by all and laid to rest in the Pioneer Cemetery in Kingman. In 1907, justice was served and Leigh was hung. He too, was buried in the Kingman Pioneer Cemetery.

In 1917, the county began the task of moving the graves of the dearly departed to the new Mountain View Cemetery. Mohave County did not pay for your loved ones to be moved to the new location. That was the family’s responsibility. So, some of the not so dearly departed, whose relatives would not come forward, were not moved. They were left behind at the deserted cemetery.

Mohave County donated the old Pioneer Cemetery property to the school board to build a new high school. A stadium and parking lot replaced the hallowed grounds. They say that in the 1940’s, a group of youngsters playing on the football field began to unearth bones of the bodies that were never moved to Mountain View Cemetery. Many organizations were alarmed and took action to have the existing remains exhumed and placed in a solitary grave on the property. There is a plaque dedicated to the unknown buried pioneers on the school grounds. The old high school is now a Kingman middle school.

And as fate would have it, Jennie Bauters and her murderer, Clement Leigh, are now buried in the same grave and entombed forever in the end zone of a football field. So if you are ever attending a big football game at the old stadium and the excitement begins to magnify—beware the rising spirits might be more than just the cheering crowd.

Jerome Arizona: Seventh Annual Ghostwalk

This year’s GhostWalk will encompass a dramatic representation of the life and times of Jennie Bauters, once the richest woman in Arizona and a businesswoman who traded within the underbelly of Jerome’s marketplace.

To give audience members a full experience, each of three guides will double as the lead character of Jennie, who will tour and interact in several scenes in five historical locations in a two-block radius of Spook Hall. Each of the scenes will take on historical significance as culled from the JHS archives, and will have a duration of 5-15 minutes, for a full tour of about one hour.

In addition to the dramatization of Jennie’s life interpreted en route and in chronological order, this script will retain last year’s acclaimed scenes of audience-mingling soiled doves on Jerome Avenue and the “big-bang” shootout finale at the Bartlett Hotel.

The stories will be factual and may not be appropriate for children 13 years and younger.

The Hunt for Extraterrestrial Life Gets Weird

Wired Magazine-- In the search for extraterrestrial life, some scientists say we’re focusing too much on finding signs of existence as we know it, and in the process, we may be missing more strange forms of life that don’t rely on water or carbon metabolism.

Now researchers from Austria have started a systematic study of solvents other than water that might be able to support life outside our planet. They’re hoping their research will lead to a shift in what they call the “geocentric mindset” of our attempts to detect extraterrestrial life.

“With our current measurement strategy for life on other planets, we will only be able to detect life which shares most of its parameters with terrestrial life,” astrobiologist Johannes Leitner of the University of Vienna, who presented his research Friday at the European Planetary Science Congress in Germany, wrote in an e-mail. “Presently we will not be able to detect exotic life, because we have no idea of its potential properties and by this, our probes to planetary surfaces do not carry instruments which can look for something exotic.”

For instance, Leitner said, we can send rovers to Mars carrying antibodies that detect traces of chemicals and bacteria that would indicate life. But because we can only make antibodies to known substances, this method will be limited to finding Earth-like life.

“When we try to find a definition for life, in most cases, such a definition is more a summary of the specific properties of terrestrial life,” Leitner said. Because life on Earth requires water, most of the search for extraterrestrial life thus far has focused on the “habitable zone,” or the relatively narrow region around a star where liquid water could exist.

But while water is liquid only between zero and 100 degrees Celsius, other solvents are liquid over a much larger temperature range. For instance, because ammonia stays liquid at a lower temperature, an ocean of ammonia could exist on a planet much further from its host star. By exploring the properties of more potential solvents, such as sulfuric acid and formamide, the researchers hope to expand the potential life-supporting zone.

Italian police seek 'Satan Squad'

BBC News-- Italian police want to set up a special unit to tackle the growth of new religious sects, particularly a violent new breed of home-grown Satanists.

The new police squad would include psychologists, as well as a priest who is an expert on the occult. It should be noted that Italian police officials have recently been in attendance at a recent conference in Malta with the Vatican's chief exorcist Father Giancarlo Gramolazzo, the current president of the International Association of Exorcists and along the Knights Of St John at their castle CASTELLO DEI BARONI .

It would co-ordinate - nationwide - investigations into potentially dangerous religious movements.

The move follows a spate of high profile, gruesome murders blamed on a new generation of Satanists.

They indulge in a lethal blend of black magic, hard drugs, sex and heavy metal.

In a recent case, a gang known as the "Beasts of Satan" bludgeoned, then buried alive, two of their own members - a young woman and her boyfriend - in woods outside Milan.

Experts say the number of Satanists in Italy is tiny - and the product as much of youthful alienation as of any more traditional religious conviction.

But more than a million Italians belong to other minority religions, and some experts are worried that the new police squad could target members of them as well - even though, despite their non-mainstream beliefs, they are entirely harmless and should not be lumped in with Satanists.

The police need to concentrate on tackling Satanic criminality, says one of the country's leading experts on new religions, or they will end up threatening religious freedom as well as wasting scarce resources.

David Carradine interview to air on 'Celebrity Ghost Stories'

New York Post-- An interview with David Carradine recorded just a few months before the actor's bizarre death -- where he talks about the afterlife and a "haunted" closet -- was kept secret until this week.

The eerie footage is going to air as a part of a series called "Celebrity Ghost Stories," premiering Oct. 3 on the cable channel BIO.

On the show, Carradine says that he believes the "ghost" of his wife Annie's dead husband visited him from the couple's bedroom closet.

The interview was filmed four months before Carradine's naked body was discovered hanging in his hotel-room closet in Bangkok June 4, in what appeared to be an autoerotic asphyxiation episode gone wrong. It was kept secret until the series was announced this week.

Rob Sharenow, BIO's senior VP of programming, said network officials debated whether to release the startling Carradine "Ghost Stories" footage immediately after his death.

"We absolutely had that conversation, but decided not to make a huge deal of it at the time . . . because we didn't want to seem like we were just rushing into something to exploit [Carradine's] passing," he says.

"We wanted to be respectful, first and foremost, and to roll the show out as planned."

In the segment, Carradine recounts how, after he married Annie (his fifth, and last, wife), strange noises started emanating from their bedroom closet.

"I think [Dana] was hanging out in the closet, and sometimes when I walked into that closet . . . it would be cold in there, unreasonably cold," Carradine says.

In another segment, Carradine recalls how he went into the "icy cold" closet, where Annie kept some of Dana's old ties.

"One of the ties was turned around and it had a little logo attached to it . . . that said 'Grateful Dead,' and I thought, what does he mean by that?" Carradine says.

"It was obviously a joke, that the dead were grateful . . . it was the only way he could communicate [that] he now felt like everything was settled, the kids were taken care of and I was gonna be there for them," Carradine says.

"And I will be."

The show features other celebs -- including Joan Rivers, Scott Baio and Carrie Fisher -- talking about their brushes with the paranormal.

Sharenow says BIO will heavily promote the Carradine episode, which airs nearly four months to the day after his death.

"We're absolutely going to feature the Carradine story prominently the week it airs," he says. "It's in the first episode, and it was always going to be in the first episode.

"While we don't want to appear as if we were exploiting his misfortune . . . we don't want to be shy about talking about it.

"It's extraordinary -- and people are going to notice it."

Should I call him a Ghost or something else?

UFO Digest-- There are more questions than answers in my true story. Before this experience I did not question if there were demons. To put it bluntly I thought demons were made up fictional creatures like the boogy man.

My experiences with ghosts for the last twenty five years have been positive and comforting. The few times I have been truly frightened by a ghost I later realized my fear was a misinterpretation of the situation, not a threat.

Twenty five years ago back when I was a ‘babe’ it wasn’t unusual for me to draw attention from the opposite sex. Sorry to say with age and time all good things end.

My story begins with something every driver dreads, going to the division of motor vehicles office. It was a sunny day in Florida and I was wearing a trendy, vulgar looking outfit that I mistook for good taste. As I entered the building I saw an odd looking man ushering people into a line. My first impression was that he looked like a troll in a fairytale. He was bald on top, had long dirty hair on the sides and was ready to explode out of his clothing like a stuffed sausage. Worst of all he appeared to be disgruntled with his job like a postal employee that dreams of killing all his co-workers! When he looked at me I politely turned my head away and got in line. I had a busy day ahead of me and I quickly forgot about the odd man once I left the DMV.

Back then I lived near the beach off a main road in a small rented house. I can’t remember if it was that night or the next night after I went to the DMV when it happened. I went to bed the night in question right after the news and quickly fell asleep. Around two in the morning I was awakened by footsteps and a man whistling in my living room. The tune he was whistling was loud enough to wake me and the idea someone was in my little house terrified me.

The intruder was blocking my only exit so I pretended to be a sleep. With the lights out I could still see and prayed he would walk past my room .The element of surprise was not in my favor and I feared for the worse. There was something sinister in the air something horrible about to happen to me. The whistling stopped abruptly as he entered my bedroom!

It was him that little Troll from the DMV or was it? His body was off white not completely white but close. He looked like a ghost but I knew it couldn’t be a ghost because the man at the DMV wasn’t dead he was alive! The Troll felt menacing to me like a villain in a slasher film .He came toward my bed and sat down facing me! He knew I was awake and he grinned when he looked at me. I knew this was a supernatural event something bad, almost evil .I felt like I was the target and something horrific was going to take place!

UFO photographed over Devon

Telegraph.co.uk-- Lee Betts, 29, spotted the glowing red shape hovering 1,000ft up in the night sky from his bedroom window.

The object moved across the sky for more than an hour on Monday evening before shooting off into the distance.

Mr Betts, of Newton St Cyres near Exeter, said he watched the unidentified object through a telescope before taking the pictures at 9pm.

He said: ''I couldn't believe it at first. The shape was about 100ft long and there were four lights coming from it initially.

''The shape moved slowly and it seemed to pivot on a central axis. Then, without warning, a sudden flash of light like a shooting star went across the sky.

''It was very strange. I have been an amateur astronomer for the past three years and I've never seen anything like it before. It's unexplained.''

A police spokesman said they had not received any reports of a UFO sighting in Devon.

Ghost Research Society reviews 2009: Waverly Hills Sanitarium

Examiner.com-- Chicago's Ghost Research Society is back in town after a few adventures around the country - a trip to Waverly Hills Sanitarium and the Mansfield Reformatory.
Following is their overview of what's been happening in their investigations.

From GRS:

2009 was an extremely active year for the Ghost Research Society as we traveled extensively around the country in search of some of the most active paranormal hotspots. Our annual investigation of the Lincoln Theater in Decatur, Illinois is always a pleasure and usually full of surprises. No visual phenomenon was recorded this time but a number of EVPs (electronic voice phenomena) were recorded by team members throughout the night. Harry Houdini once performed on stage at the Lincoln Theater and team members Nicole Tito and Lisa Krick picked up a strange clear Class “A” voice saying, “Magic!” which I find fascinating given the Houdini connection.

Our two main highlights for the year were out of state trips to Waverly Hills Sanitarium in Louisville, Kentucky and Mansfield Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio.

Waverly Hills Sanitarium was an old tuberculosis sanitarium where thousands of people died. Quite a bit of paranormal activity has been reported there in the past including the appearances of “shadow people” seen drifting down the hallways and into the vacant rooms. Strange sounds of footsteps, slamming doors and the movement of objects have also been reported. On the third floor, allegedly the ghosts of children have been encountered. Researchers in the past have left behind “trigger objects” such as balls and toys for the ghosts to play with and some have indeed done just that.

During an EVP session with a device known as Frank’s Box, researchers Rosemary Ellen Guiley, Joey Tito, Joe Tito, Jason Tito had placed a remote controlled truck on the ground for the ghosts to play with. Frank’s Box is a device whereby alleged two-way communication with a spirit is possible. Guiley asked the ghosts to move it around and a response came through Frank’s Box that sounded like, “It’s hard”. Guiley then suggested that they have their ghostly friends help move the truck and at that moment using a state of the art infrared digital trap camera (Moultrie I-40) I snapped a picture in the opposite direction down the darkened corridor. When the images were later uploaded to my laptop, I was amazed to see the distinct images of four small shadowy figures standing in the empty hallway.

Coast to Coast AM - 09 Sep 2009 - Real Vampires part 1/8

Formal Exorcism Class Offered

VAONews.com-- Convinced that the devil's lure is on the rise among the young, the Vatican is responding with a new special course on Satanism, black magic, and the healing power of exorcism.

The two-month course began at the "Regina Apostolorum," one of Rome's prestigious pontifical universities. The course has been described as both "theoretical and practical" and is open to priests and theology students only.

Teachers include exorcists and psychiatrists. One of the issues that will be addressed is how to tell the difference between someone who is possessed and someone who simply has psychological problems.

The new course stemmed from alarm in the Vatican with the growing interest in Satanism and its practices. A respected research institute, Eurispes, has catalogued 650 satanic organizations in Italy.

Church officials have estimated that half a million Italians have had contact with satanic sects. Experts say these sects are growing very quickly. They add that young people especially are exposed to the phenomenon through the media, rock music and the Internet.

The Vatican also has felt young people are turning away from God and toward the occult. A number of recent incidents involving young people who had fallen victim to devil-worshipping sects in Italy highlighted the problem.

In one of the most disturbing cases, two teenage heavy metal musicians were killed in a human sacrifice by fellow band members.

In 1999, under the guidance of its chief exorcist, Father Gabriele Amorth, the Vatican updated the ritual for exorcism for the first time since 1614.

Guidelines tell priests authorized to carry out exorcisms to "diligently examine the facts," before sprinkling holy water on someone claiming to be possessed by Satan.

Students in the Vatican course will be taught to be vigilant for signs of Satan's presence, which include speaking in unknown languages and showing disproportionate physical strength.

Church Of Satan Interview -- Magistra Peggy Nadramia

Note: This archived interview we came across is approximately fifteen years old. We hope you find it interesting.

AngleFire.com-- I was VERY fortunate to be able to interview Mrs. Peggy Nadramia of The Church Of Satan. She is currently a Magistra, On-line representative, and runner of the publishing company, Hell's Kitchen Productions. I hope you enjoy this.....

Q: How long have you been a member of The Church Of Satan?

Peggy: About 15 years.

Q: Were you aother religion before you became a Satanist?

Peggy: I was raised a Catholic and attended Catholic school. However, I was never quite sure about the God thing and declared myself an athiest in my early teens.

Q: What are your personal views on Christianity?

Peggy: While I know many worthwhile individuals (including members of my own family) who are Christian, I consider it a destructive, anti-life philosophy that has set the human race back thousands of years.

Q: Do you ever get threats from Christians for being a Satanist?

Peggy: Yes. (yawns)

Q: What are the duties of a Magistra in The Church?

Peggy: A Magistra of Satan takes on responsibilities for the Church as she sees fit-- when she sees something that needs to be done, she volunteers to do it, or finds someone who can. Occasionally she may get requests from our High Priest, Anton LaVey, but these are requests, not orders. Activities usually involve media representation or screening of other members.

Q: Does the Church ever associate with the Temple Of Set?

Peggy: The Temple Of Set has a history, since its inception in 1975, of spreading of spreading lies and misinformation about the Church of Satan and Anton LaVey.

Q: Do you speak to Dr. LaVey on a daily basis?

Peggy: Not daily, no. I don't even speak to my mother _that_ often!

Q: Have you or Dr. LaVey spoken to Charles Manson?

Peggy: No.

Q: Have you personally spoken to Rev. Marilyn Manson?

Peggy: No, but my husband, Peter H. Gilmore, has met with him.

Q: Were you present when Dr.LaVey spoke to Richard Ramirez?

Peggy: No -- that was many years ago, and it was only a brief encounter on the street.

Q: Is Dr.LaVey working on any side projects now?

Peggy: He is always writing and recording more music. He is also raising his son, four-year-old Satan Xerxes Carnacki LaVey.

Q: Do you have any other occupations outside of The Church?

Peggy: I edit and publish a horror journal, _Grue_. I also run our publishing company, Hell's Kitchen Productions.

Q: What is your daily schedule like?

Peggy: I rise around eleven or twelve, take my dog to the park, do some paperwork, answer phone calls, faxes and e-mail. Then I usually have a meal. We often have evening engagements with other area Satanists or those coming through town. I'll typically do some more work at my computer between one and four a.m., and then go to bed.

Q: Does the Church recognize Wicca?

Peggy: Yes -- it's a nice little religion and Wiccans are often nice people.

Q: Are you ever recognized in the general public as being a Satanist?

Peggy: No -- in fact, never. I'm very good at disappearing.

Q: Do you have children?

Peggy: No.

Q: If you did, would you raise them in a Satanic atmosphere or let them chose their own religion?

Peggy: I don't think I could raise them in anything BUT a Satanic "atmosphere," but I'd certainly let them make their own decisions about religion.

Peggy Nadramia is an American magazine editor and administrator in the Church of Satan, of which she is the current High Priestess, and in which she is known as Magistra Nadramia, as well as the wife of current church head Peter H. Gilmore.

She became High Priestess on April 30, 2002, when she was appointed to the office by the previous High Priestess, Blanche Barton. From May 2001, she had served as Magistra Templi Rex of the Church.

Order Of The Nine Angles Satanists Jailed Over Ritual Killing

AboveTopSecret.com-- A couple who killed a friend by stabbing him 66 times in a Satanic ritual were jailed today in a case that has fascinated Germany with bizarre details of devil worship and vampirism.
Daniel Ruda, a 26-year-old former car parts salesman, and his 23-year-old wife Manuela had confessed to the killing in their apartment, surrounded by human skulls, cemetery lights, scalpels and incense.

They have shown no remorse, saying the devil ordered them to send him a human sacrifice because he wanted a "court jester".

A judge in the western town of Bochum sentenced Daniel to 15 years and Manuela 13 years in a psychiatric ward.

The court heard how Manuela acquired a taste for vampirism during a visit to London, where she attended Order Of The Nine Angles "bite parties" at which people voluntarily had blood sucked from their veins.

Throughout the case, the couple shown defiant behaviour in court, making rude gestures, rolling their eyes maniacally and sticking their tongues out.

Manuela, a former high school student who said she drifted into the "Gothic" scene after the devil contacted her when she was 14, slept in a coffin in their apartment.

She met Daniel after responding to his advertisement in a heavy metal magazine that read: "Pitch black vampire seeks princess of darkness who hates everything and everyone."
The dead man, a 33-year-old colleague of Daniel Ruda's, was found in the couple's apartment covered in knife wounds and with a scalpel protruding from his stomach. A pentagram, the sign of the Devil, had been carved into his chest.

The couple spent a week on the run after the murder last July, driving around Germany and attempting suicide several times.

They were arrested after being spotted at a petrol station in Jena.

During that week Daniel had bought a chainsaw, saying he did not want to be empty-handed when the Devil called again.

The court heard during the trial how the two had launched themselves into a world of devil worship, inciting each other to commit violence.

Daniel said he had merely been a tool of the devil. "If you run someone over with a car, you don't prosecute the car," he said at one point.
